Adjectives

In 7th grade English, the concept of adjectives and nouns used as direct objects to describe a person was sometimes confusing. For example, the use of “sparkly” here is an adjective: My mom has a sparkly personality! But, a noun can also be used as a descriptor when in the object part of a sentence as shown with “teacher” in this sentence: My mom is a teacher.

Sporty Girls

Many years back, Nike had a great commercial about girls and sports, titled “If You Let Me Play.”

I Will Not Feel Guilty!

I walk around with a lot of mama guilt. Perhaps it comes from my genetic code–we Jewish mothers are known for inflicting guilt upon our children (i.e. “Honey, why aren’t you coming home for Rosh Hashanah? Don’t you know it’s the New Year? It’s giving me heart palpitations as we speak.”). But no, I’m not pushing this guilt ONTO my children, the one feeling the guilt is dear old me.

A Proud Moment in Parenting

Photobucket

We all have our moments when we think: “Hey, that wasn’t so bad! Maybe I’m good at this parenting thing after all!” Moments when our kid says thank you without being prompted. Moments when she has a cold but remembers to sneeze into the crook of her elbow versus the top of her sister’s head. Moments when the kids are laughing together in the back seat of the car instead of whacking each others’ hands and wailing. Moments of pride in our kid and in our self.

And then we have those other moments.

Dear Barnes and Noble,

I suppose I should first apologize if the Fancy Nancy and Berenstain Bear books are re-shelved incorrectly. They did indeed try their best to put them back neatly.

In fact, their behavior upstairs was so stellar that I suppose I let my guard down on our trip to the check-out.

Kindergarten Round-Up

Last week, Annabel and I attended kindergarten round-up at our local elementary school. This date had been marked in hot pink on my calendar for months–we both had butterflies in our stomachs but excitedly arrived at the school eager for a tour, a peek into kindergarten life, an introduction to the faculty, and a general feeling of warmth that I feel upon entering a school that teems with children.

We were both sorely disappointed.

In Training

Perhaps Luke, my three year-old son, read my last post. Perhaps he picked up on its gentle hints that I’m a supporter of an egalitarian household, that I don’t want my children to ever see ME stuck in any one role (i.e. “house cleaner”), nor do I ever want them to feel pegged into any role themselves.

Today, THIS is what he decided to do in his free time while his sister was at school:

From the Mouth of Babes

Last week, I attended conference night at my children’s preschool. While waiting on the pint-sized chair outside of Luke’s classroom for my 15-minute conference which was 20-minutes late, I perused the reading material on the pint-sized table. There was a stack of photographs of the children from various school events during the year, there were hand-painted notecards that will be auctioned off, and there was a book entitled, “What Does Mommy Do While I’m at School?”

What Did You Want to Be When You Grew Up?

Photobucket

Last December, I found an old book of photos and notes from my elementary school where I had recorded what I wanted to be when I grew up right alongside some hideous photos of my 2nd grade self in huge 80′s eyeglasses. I’d scrawled, “Writer.” I wrote the same thing in 3rd grade and again in 5th grade, after a truly bizarro 4th grade year when I’d decided I wanted to be a “model.” (I can only guess that my 3-inch long rat tail had inspired me to be in pictures.)
