Does your family have the same problem mine does in the morning? Do you rush around, trying to fit in the breakfast-eating, the bed-making, the teeth-brushing, the shoe-finding, the sunscreen-applying–all in time to load the car and get to school on time? I’m an ultra-organized person (hence, my overuse of hyphens). You’d think I’d have it figured out by now. I set my alarm to wake up before my kids do, get myself dressed, get the coffee going. And yet, each school day, we’re presented with this mad rush at the last minute!

Exercise–for your kids’ sake |
My newest exercise craze is the Latin dance workout, Zumba. It’s a crazy, high-energy class that combines salsa moves with hip hop and samba and mambo, all set to loud, pumping music. This morning, I participated in a Zumba class at my YMCA. How I wish I had the Latina heritage in me–my hips don’t seem to move in that sexy samba way. I’m thinking that my instructor probably isn’t Latina herself–perhaps the name Ramona Goldstein gave that away. But man, did this girl have energy! If I could steal half of her endorphin bursts, I could make it past 3 pm without a second cup of coffee.

See Something, Say Something, and then Say It Louder |
My daughter’s awesome pre-school was recently written up by state regulators for a number of “serious” violations. It was the first time any violation of state codes had ever been found in twenty-some years and necessitated the new director to send home notice to all the parents detailing the infractions and informing us of how the center was responding. The experience was hard on the teachers and staff of the center, though I imagine it was harder on the new families whose children had just started. We old hands, I think, were less concerned thanks in large part to the fact that our children were still alive and in one piece after attending the center for several years. As ready as I am to brush the whole thing off, it has made me think about the safety of our kids.

If He Doesn’t Feel the Difference, He Has No Feeling |
I want to piggy back on Tara’s post about women who want Calgon to take them away. Tara asserts, rightly so I think, that women can’t have it all and that we have to prioritize some things in our life. I would add though that it shouldn’t be that hard for today’s woman to come a heck of lot closer than she once did to having both a good home life with her kids and a meaningful career. The key, I believe, is for our partners to become true partners in child rearing (this means he needs to know how the parts of the sippy cup go together) and in running the home (this means he’s gotta figure out not just how to run the vacuum but when to run the vacuum).

Calgon Can’t (and Shouldn’t) Take Us Away |
Remember those 1980s Calgon commercials? The frazzled woman standing in front of a series of frenetic images – traffic, the boss, the baby, the dog – begging for Calgon to take her away to a magical, quiet place in her bathtub. Well, it turns out Calgon was not a strong enough balm. As Maureen Dowd points out in a recent column, women are still feeling frazzled and, according to several studies, gloomier.
The reason for women’s increasing unhappiness is that they have more and more choices. Dowd writes, “When women stepped into male-dominated realms, they put more demands — and stress — on themselves. If they once judged themselves on looks, kids, hubbies, gardens and dinner parties, now they judge themselves on looks, kids, hubbies, gardens, dinner parties — and grad school, work, office deadlines and meshing a two-career marriage.” No amount of Calgon – even if you mainlined it – could soothe all those stresses.

Dreaming of Outer Space |
I woke up this morning and heard Annabel milling around already. Usually she comes into bed with me if she wakes up first, but I think Antony and I have her scared of waking us too early. I walked into our back room, flooded with morning sunlight, and found her laying on the couch, covered up with a soft, fuzzy blanket.

Disney Princesses on Ice |
Annabel and I had the fortune of attending Disney’s Princesses on Ice show with several of our friends on Sunday afternoon. We decided to go because:
a) Annabel, at almost 5, is still a bit obsessed with princesses.
b) It’s always fun to have a mother/daughter outing and leave the boys at home.
and
c) The tickets were hugely discounted at $9.99.
Upon entering the parking lot, however, I realized that this was not the deal of the century.

Mama’s Gone Crazy in the Bathroom |
During 6th grade gym class, Wendy Soloff widened her eyes at me. “You don’t shave your legs?” she sneered. “What are you, a baby?” That afternoon in the bathroom at home, I looked down at that baby fine blonde hair, “borrowed” my older sister’s razor, and began my hate affair with shaven legs.

South African Pancakes and Other Lies We Tell Our Children |
This morning I cooked Cottage Cheese Pancakes, taken from an awesome chef’s blog called Mmm…That’s Good. These pancakes are so healthy and extremely quick and easy to make. I’d rather give my kids, and myself, a breakfast that includes some protein for high energy, but I get a little sick of hard-boiled eggs. These pancakes are low in sugar and high in protein, quite different from most of the processed, pre-packaged breakfasts out there. And they tasted so yummy! They reminded me of the taste of a crepe, just thicker. And smothered in real maple syrup, my kids gobbled them up.

Weird Parenting Advice |
The unsolicited advice starts to bombard you when you’re pregnant. Perfect strangers put their two cents in about how you’re carrying predicts the gender of your baby. A woman stops you on the street to tell you that your high heels are too high for an expecting mother. Your friend’s aunt gently reminds you that just because you’re having a baby doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to eat for two; hint, hint, drop that brownie sundae!
