Hate Tummy Time? Try This

If you’re reading this blog and you have an infant, you’ve probably already discovered some tummy time tricks by doing a web search. Unless you’re like me that is, and it just never occurred to you that there had to be a better way besides just plopping your kid on her belly and letting her scream for 15 minutes. (Okay, the longest I actually could stand to let my first born scream was 5.) Having gotten sooo much wiser with baby number two thanks to the web, I thought I’d share.

Kids and Sports

When I think back on my own childhood activities, I remember playing tag, ghost in the graveyard, and capture the flag, all in my own neighborhood. We had 11 kids in our cul-de-sac alone, and add the kids from down the street, and we had enough for a pick-up game of “whatever,” be it soccer or football or dodgeball, whenever school was out.

It’s different today.

The School Lunch Solution

At Annabel and Luke’s school today, some moms and I were discussing the school lunch dilemma. How much food should we send? What will our kids actually eat? How do we offer them variety without making ourselves crazy? How can we encourage healthy eating?

It seemed like my kids were the best eaters of the bunch. I highly doubt that’s my doing–I tend to think with kids and eating habits, you get what you get, and then you keep trying! I’m lucky that my kids eat salad and live for fruit, but I know that’s not always the case. So here it is, I’m no guru, but I thought I’d try to offer my best school lunch solutions:

And this is why I shouldn’t write during the day…

It was quiet, too quiet in a house with my children. Annabel had just returned from a morning at school, and for once, she was happy to play with her brother in her room. The door was slightly closed, and I didn’t hear much noise besides the occasional giggle. I was enjoying unusual, uninterrupted daytime moments to write, jotting down ideas for future posts.

Being Your Child’s Greatest Advocate

The beginning of the school year brings about many changes in your child’s, and in your, life. Often there are new schools, new classrooms, new teachers, new friends. With these bring immediate and specific concerns: how do I find my way around the school? which adults can I turn to for help? where is the bathroom and how do I ask to use it? who will sit next to me at lunchtime?

Playing with Fire

Despite my declaration to my doctors post-delivery that I would never need to worry about birth control again because I would never be having sex again, it appears that I do indeed need to investigate my options. It would seem that I alone am surprised by this turn of events. And so I’m not surprised by such a turn of events again in the future, I thought I’d review my options post haste and query you, gentle friends and fertile masses for your thoughts.

Transition Time Can be Hard on Us All

We’re about to attend the pre-school orientation for Annabel…and for Luke. My baby boy is almost 2 1/2, and we’ve decided to send him to Annabel’s school for two mornings a week. It’s going to be a total of eight hours, and yet I feel like I’m sending him to Alaska for college.

Back to School Clothes

Palm Beach County schools resumed classes today. I called my neighbor, Alicia, to find out how her kids’ first day of school went. Thomas declared that he loves his teacher and that first grade is “so much better than kindergarten.” Savannah began her first day of middle school with tears in the car. Not exactly the best way to begin the 6th grade, but I have high hopes for Savannah. She’s outgoing, artistic, and not too concerned with fashion at the moment. I’m going to keep telling her she’s good at math and science, too.
