Mama Grizzly vs Mama Sea Turtle

Photobucket

Lately I find myself careening madly between being a mama sea turtle and a mama grizzly bear. While biologist would, no doubt, avoid placing reptilian motherhood on the same scale as mammalian, I can’t help but see my own ability, or inability, to protect my young in these two creatures.

Sporty Girls

Many years back, Nike had a great commercial about girls and sports, titled “If You Let Me Play.”

Sick?

Luke has been sent home from preschool twice in the past week. “He’s really sick,” his teacher told me on the phone. “His nose is running constantly.”

This surprised me, especially when I picked him up in the school office and he was happily playing with the Noah’s Ark toy and chatting away with the secretary.

Dental Care

Yesterday afternoon, Annabel had a dental check-up. I take her to my regular dentist, not a pediatric one, because on my crappy dental plan, that’s considered a “specialist.” And when I weigh a $10 copay with a $150-200 bill, the decision to forego the movie on the ceiling and the kid-themed walls was a simple one.

To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate…That is the Question

With my education background centering on literature and world history, the effects of the Plague on Medieval Europe are well-known to me, but mostly in the theoretical sense. I can hear my professors’ voices and our class discussions now…

The Bubonic Plague killed off 1/3 of the population…it helped to end feudalism…it did not care if you were a peasant or a knight or a lord…people thought that God was punishing them for their earthly sins…symptoms included carbuncles in the groin and armpit…it spread through direct and airborne contact…people died within five days…people died…people died…as many as 50 million people died…

This education of mine, broad and Humanistic as it was, did not prepare me for the scientific jargon and explanations on our government’s websites regarding the H1N1 influenza virus. And I certainly feel unprepared for making the enormous decision on whether or not to vaccinate my young children.

The OED cites “heartache” from 1000 (meaning “heartburn”). But Hamlet’s use of the word is the first recorded use of “heartache” to mean “pain or anguish of mind, esp. that arising from disappointed hope or affection.”

Sick and Tired of Feeling Sick and Tired

“Hello?” I answer.

“Cindy?” the voice questions.

Now at this point I’d like to say, “Who else would be at my house answering the phone at 7:28 pm?” But instead, I am sweet, “Yep.”

“You sound awful.”

“Thanks.”

Now, I prefer to think of my voice as my nasal transvestite alter ego. Once in a while the raspy throaty scratch sounds sexy.

Everybody Stop and Panic!

My throat’s choked up. My shoulders are tight. There’s a panicky feeling in my stomach. And I’m feeling the beginnings of a headache just behind my eyes. All this tension and no child in sight. What gives? Swine flu!

Exercise–for your kids’ sake

My newest exercise craze is the Latin dance workout, Zumba. It’s a crazy, high-energy class that combines salsa moves with hip hop and samba and mambo, all set to loud, pumping music. This morning, I participated in a Zumba class at my YMCA. How I wish I had the Latina heritage in me–my hips don’t seem to move in that sexy samba way. I’m thinking that my instructor probably isn’t Latina herself–perhaps the name Ramona Goldstein gave that away. But man, did this girl have energy! If I could steal half of her endorphin bursts, I could make it past 3 pm without a second cup of coffee.

The School Lunch Solution

At Annabel and Luke’s school today, some moms and I were discussing the school lunch dilemma. How much food should we send? What will our kids actually eat? How do we offer them variety without making ourselves crazy? How can we encourage healthy eating?

It seemed like my kids were the best eaters of the bunch. I highly doubt that’s my doing–I tend to think with kids and eating habits, you get what you get, and then you keep trying! I’m lucky that my kids eat salad and live for fruit, but I know that’s not always the case. So here it is, I’m no guru, but I thought I’d try to offer my best school lunch solutions:
