We’re holding your daughter hostage. Here is our list of demands:

Mama Grizzly vs Mama Sea Turtle |
Lately I find myself careening madly between being a mama sea turtle and a mama grizzly bear. While biologist would, no doubt, avoid placing reptilian motherhood on the same scale as mammalian, I can’t help but see my own ability, or inability, to protect my young in these two creatures.

A Feast in the Making |
My kids are making dinner tonight. This gift is coming when it’s truly needed–I’ve cooked all week long, even trying two new recipes, and I’m done. I’m cooked. I’m through with my kitchen. And it’s Saturday night, too! It’s date night, and we’re at home without a babysitter, so having someone else do the cooking is a real treat.

Stumbling Through Breastfeeding |
I sensed there would be a problem the moment the instructor of my breastfeeding class showed video footage of various mothers nursing their children: clip after clip of babies latching onto perfectly protruded nipples. My nipples didn’t do that.

No-Bake Valentine’s Day Cookies |
I am not a baker. I can make a mean birthday cake as well as anyone, thanks to Betty Crocker, and I’m well-read enough to follow a recipe, but I don’t enjoy baking like my mom does. I’m more of an appetizer and main course chick myself; give me a pasta dish with fourteen ingredients any day and I’m your gal.
But I had to share this: I just made Valentine’s Day cookies with my daughter, and I even KIND OF made up the recipe (okay, I just totally stole it from my friend, Leslie, and changed 2 ingredients, but…). And you can go to the store right now and make these cookies in less than 20 minutes!

Contrasts |
Usually when we go on a family trip, whether it’s been to Disney World or to Kansas City, we take about a bijillion photos of our kids. I’m sure most of my friends hate receiving that email from Kodak Gallery from me, because they know that I’ve uploaded 126 photographs of my children in various poses for them to enjoy at their leisure.
This past weekend, Antony and I were fortunate enough (thanks to Amex reward points and my parents) to travel on a 3-day ALONE TRIP to Montreal.

It’s Beginning to Smell a Lot Like… |
Come over and smell my house (if you’re not a crazy stalker, that is). It’s the season of giving, of holiday cheer, and in my opinion, it’s also the season of gluttonous eating. No, my house doesn’t smell like Christmas cookies or cloves and cinnamon. Over here at Hannukah central, it smells like oil. Imagine a Waffle House mixed with KFC mixed with McDonald’s French fry smell, and that’s what’s wafting from my kitchen to every surface in the house. It’s even coating my hair.

Halloween Candy |
On Sunday, my husband came home with two bags of Halloween candy. He broke the two Halloween candy rules that I try to follow:
1) He purchased candy that I actually like! (in this case, Reeses peanut butter cups and KitKats)
and
2) He purchased it two weeks before Halloween (which ensures that I’ll have to buy more for the trick-or-treaters).

South African Pancakes and Other Lies We Tell Our Children |
This morning I cooked Cottage Cheese Pancakes, taken from an awesome chef’s blog called Mmm…That’s Good. These pancakes are so healthy and extremely quick and easy to make. I’d rather give my kids, and myself, a breakfast that includes some protein for high energy, but I get a little sick of hard-boiled eggs. These pancakes are low in sugar and high in protein, quite different from most of the processed, pre-packaged breakfasts out there. And they tasted so yummy! They reminded me of the taste of a crepe, just thicker. And smothered in real maple syrup, my kids gobbled them up.

The School Lunch Solution |
At Annabel and Luke’s school today, some moms and I were discussing the school lunch dilemma. How much food should we send? What will our kids actually eat? How do we offer them variety without making ourselves crazy? How can we encourage healthy eating?
It seemed like my kids were the best eaters of the bunch. I highly doubt that’s my doing–I tend to think with kids and eating habits, you get what you get, and then you keep trying! I’m lucky that my kids eat salad and live for fruit, but I know that’s not always the case. So here it is, I’m no guru, but I thought I’d try to offer my best school lunch solutions:
