U is for Underwear

One of our favorite book series is the Frances series by Russell Hoban. Frances is a young badger, and her escapades with bedtime battles, friend troubles, picky eating, new babies in the house, and birthday jealousies are accompanied by Frances’s lovely little made-up songs.

Dear Barnes and Noble,

I suppose I should first apologize if the Fancy Nancy and Berenstain Bear books are re-shelved incorrectly. They did indeed try their best to put them back neatly.

In fact, their behavior upstairs was so stellar that I suppose I let my guard down on our trip to the check-out.

Potty Training: Where Ideals Meet Reality

My husband and I deemed not over praising Lucy one of our parenting core values. In fact, this core value is so important to us that one of the reasons Lucy will be attending a Montessori preschool next year (besides the fact that it’s one of the two schools that accepted her) is because one of Montessori’s basic tenets is fostering intrinsic motivation, so there is generally no giving of evaluative praise or rewards in a Montessori classroom.

Enter potty training. It’s the classic case of ideals meeting reality.

What We’re Reading Right Now…

A Work in Progress: Motherhood

I recently purchased a book, Steady Days, written by fellow blogger, Jamie C. Martin. She writes a blog called Steady Mom, on the journey toward intentional, professional motherhood. I like that tagline. Read it again, “intentional, professional motherhood.” To paraphrase Jamie, what if we all began each day with our children as intentionally and as professionally as we approached our careers in those former lives before we had children?

I wish, I seriously wish, that someone had posed that question to me when I first became a mother.

Slacker Mom No Longer

It’s happened. It’s finally happened. After two and a half years of skipping words and turning past whole pages of books, my son has finally caught on and called me on my tricks. I will no longer be able to be a slacker mom and rush through a book ever again.

The V-Word

Annabel, my four and a half year-old, is learning to read. Part of this process is just exposure to books, part of it is “sight” words (like “STOP” or “No” or “Publix”), and part of it is memorization. She’d memorized all of The Cat in the Hat almost two years ago. Now, she’s moved on to Curious George books, too. But my favorite part about it is her complete confidence in herself that she can read ANY word, ANY book.

And she can’t.
