Hide and Seek

It’s a rainy day here…again. After coloring, playing “doggie” (during which my children beg me for a real puppy again and again), making banana muffins AND orange jello, both kids begged me to play hide and seek with them.

Public School Prayer

Kindergarten has been good. I don’t know what to truly say about it because I know so little about what happens during the day compared to the mushy, lovey-dovey, religious-based preschool that Annabel attended. I do know that I have to drag my five year-old out of bed in the morning, that she’s more tired than she’s ever been (except for those first 4 colicky months) after a six-hour school day, and that she loves P.E.

U is for Underwear

One of our favorite book series is the Frances series by Russell Hoban. Frances is a young badger, and her escapades with bedtime battles, friend troubles, picky eating, new babies in the house, and birthday jealousies are accompanied by Frances’s lovely little made-up songs.

Kindergarten

My baby girl started kindergarten last week. To be frank, I’m too close to it, too emotional about her growing up, too scared by my own fears about the big elementary school to even write much about it right now. I need some distance, which is strange for me.

Disappointment

My four year-old niece met me halfway down the stairs, wearing a purple and green Tinkebell nightgown and a frown.

Hard Questions

Yesterday we went to Babies R Us to buy a baby gift for my friend, Brittany, who’s adopting a baby next month. Annabel, my five year-old, helped me to choose a bouncy seat and a set of newborn onesies in shades of brown and pink. While at the check-out, Annabel looked at me and scrunched up her mouth. “When’s Brittany having her baby?”

“You Happy Now?”: Teaching My Toddler About Unconditional Love

Yesterday my two-year-old Lucy, once again, lunged to hug her five-week-old brother while he was in his moving swing.  Knowing she was breaking a rule (a lot of new rules have been implemented since the birth of baby Mark), she looked at me while in motion.  Sensing my silent disapproval of what she was about to do, she stopped, then ran toward me asking, “You happy now?”

Along with wanting to drink water from a bottle and for me to periodically pat her bottom while she pretends to be a baby, this you-happy-now question has emerged as one of Lucy’s new behaviors since her brother’s birth.

Thanks, Bonnie

This morning, I was supposed to pick up my parents at the airport. I called to check that their flight was on time, cajoled the kids into going to the bathroom before we left, and headed out for the 25-minute ride. Almost an hour later, due to Tropical Storm Bonnie and three traffic accidents, we pulled up to the Arrivals area.
