A friend of mine told me the other night that your child’s pleasure in a toy is inversely proportional to how much you spent on it. Clearly my kids got the memo because here are their new favorites.
What are your kids’ favorite toys?

“Did you buy the stuff I like???” |
We eat fairly healthy around here, though chocolate is admittedly a main food group for our entire family. And ever since I was pregnant with Annabel (yikes!) six years ago, I’ve been conscious to drink organic milk and eat organic dairy products. In Santa Monica, we were lucky to have weekly farmer’s markets from which to buy fresh local produce. But here in Boca Raton, while fresh citrus, berries, and some leafy greens can indeed be found locally, our local supermarket chain likes to individually wrap produce in plastic. Yuck.

Dear Barnes and Noble, |
I suppose I should first apologize if the Fancy Nancy and Berenstain Bear books are re-shelved incorrectly. They did indeed try their best to put them back neatly.
In fact, their behavior upstairs was so stellar that I suppose I let my guard down on our trip to the check-out.

Free Books at Borders! |
Because I love the words “FREE” and “BOOK,” and I love them even more in the same sentence, I’m letting all of you readers know about this wonderful Double Dog Dare summer reading promotion that Borders Books is running.

Black-out Shades |
Has daylight savings time messed up your child’s sleep schedule? Is the sunlight streaming into his window at the usual 7:30 bedtime, making it impossible to insist to him that it really indeed IS nighttime? And what about the morning? Is that dark, gloomy dawn tricking your daughter into thinking that she can stay in bed just fifteen more minutes, wreaking havoc on your off-to-school routine?
While I’m all for extra daylight, playing outside with friends, and sleeping in, this whole daylight savings thing can really do a number on young children’s sleep. So what have I done with this problem? Do what I always do–go online and find a solution.

What We’re Reading Right Now… |
We read a lot at this house. Our bookshelves in the family room are stuffed every which way with historical fiction novels, poetry anthologies, professional guides, self-help books, modern-day war stories, contemporary literature, and my mom’s favorite, book about African snakes.

A Work in Progress: Motherhood |
I recently purchased a book, Steady Days, written by fellow blogger, Jamie C. Martin. She writes a blog called Steady Mom, on the journey toward intentional, professional motherhood. I like that tagline. Read it again, “intentional, professional motherhood.” To paraphrase Jamie, what if we all began each day with our children as intentionally and as professionally as we approached our careers in those former lives before we had children?
I wish, I seriously wish, that someone had posed that question to me when I first became a mother.

A Baby Gear List for Soon-To-Be Parents |
A few of my friends are going to become first-time parents in the next few months. The birth of some chubby little babes is a great way to kick off a new decade! Although nothing really prepares you for all the joys and struggles the birth of your babe brings, getting the necessary gear and doing some reading beforehand will certainly make the transition smoother.

Interfaith Holiday Celebrations |
Sure, you can bake cookies cut out in the shapes of both Santa AND dreidels. Sure, you can eat potato latkes and drink egg nog. You can also sing “Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer” and “Hannukah, oh Hannukah, Come Light the Menorah.”
But how many of you have a tree that looks like this?

Spending Money |
The kids’ school is having a book fair at our local Barnes and Noble this week, which means that a portion of the book sales goes directly to the school. As I love books, good causes, free gift wrapping, and strong coffee, our attendance at story time today was a no-brainer. We met several friends from school to make foam sticker crafts, listen to Hannukah stories, and drink lattes (me, not my kids.)
