Hide and Seek

It’s a rainy day here…again. After coloring, playing “doggie” (during which my children beg me for a real puppy again and again), making banana muffins AND orange jello, both kids begged me to play hide and seek with them.

Public School Prayer

Kindergarten has been good. I don’t know what to truly say about it because I know so little about what happens during the day compared to the mushy, lovey-dovey, religious-based preschool that Annabel attended. I do know that I have to drag my five year-old out of bed in the morning, that she’s more tired than she’s ever been (except for those first 4 colicky months) after a six-hour school day, and that she loves P.E.

U is for Underwear

One of our favorite book series is the Frances series by Russell Hoban. Frances is a young badger, and her escapades with bedtime battles, friend troubles, picky eating, new babies in the house, and birthday jealousies are accompanied by Frances’s lovely little made-up songs.

Kindergarten

My baby girl started kindergarten last week. To be frank, I’m too close to it, too emotional about her growing up, too scared by my own fears about the big elementary school to even write much about it right now. I need some distance, which is strange for me.

Hard Questions

Yesterday we went to Babies R Us to buy a baby gift for my friend, Brittany, who’s adopting a baby next month. Annabel, my five year-old, helped me to choose a bouncy seat and a set of newborn onesies in shades of brown and pink. While at the check-out, Annabel looked at me and scrunched up her mouth. “When’s Brittany having her baby?”

Thanks, Bonnie

This morning, I was supposed to pick up my parents at the airport. I called to check that their flight was on time, cajoled the kids into going to the bathroom before we left, and headed out for the 25-minute ride. Almost an hour later, due to Tropical Storm Bonnie and three traffic accidents, we pulled up to the Arrivals area.

Right to Brag

On this blog, I frequently like to write of the crazy, funny things that my children do. I like to think that I catalog those moments, like when Annabel dressed up in my bra over her party dress, or when Luke wore his sister’s pink leotard, in order to remember them when my children are older (and of course, to make fun of them later in life, or to show these photos at their weddings).

Yesterday, however, was a serious moment of great pride for Antony and me as parents.

My “New” Babies

Antony and I cleaned out our kitchen cabinets last night. We decided to donate anything that we haven’t used in two years. This was of course, being generous to some of our kitchen items, such as the rice cooker and the toaster oven. Some things have hidden themselves at the back our cupboards for five years now. Imagine our surprise to find that rusty pasta strainer, the chipped ceramic bowl we received as a wedding gift, and old candles melted together.

Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be…

PIRATES.

That’s what Luke likes to play lately. Perhaps it was from watching Peter Pan, or perhaps he picked it up from the black eye patch in his friend’s dress-up box, or perhaps it was the fact that his first face painting experience at the library turned him into a cross between Captain Hook and Julio Iglesias. Wherever the new phase came from, it’s MOSTLY amusing.

A Feast in the Making

My kids are making dinner tonight. This gift is coming when it’s truly needed–I’ve cooked all week long, even trying two new recipes, and I’m done. I’m cooked. I’m through with my kitchen. And it’s Saturday night, too! It’s date night, and we’re at home without a babysitter, so having someone else do the cooking is a real treat.
